Everything goes swimmingly by the Drôme river

Swimming

You can’t have too much water and it’s good for your health, especially if you go straight to the springhead. Water will underpin your sunny summer holidays. So, put on your swimwear and get a tan on the ‘beaches’ by the rivers and lakes with mountain views, or try the swimming pools of the area. In the Pays Diois it can be hot, very hot, so keep some ideas up your sleeve if you want to be able to cool off.

Get your fill of Diois vitamins by the river

Between the Bâtie des Fonts and Pontaix, the Drôme river, the spine of the Pays Diois, is one of the wildest in France. It offers white pebble beaches and excellent water quality. Tempting and not far from the road network, it attracts kayakers and swimmers. Off the beaten track, the Escharis gorge in the Roanne valley, between St Nazaire-le-Désert and St Benoît-en-Diois, follows a rocky course and features sculpted pools of tumbling water which invite the swimmer.

Be eco-responsible,

in this fragile natural environment avoid noise and disturbance, for the sake of the heron population; refrain from building dams and allow free circulation for ‘fario’ brown trout; eat a zero-waste picnic; use a natural sun cream and don’t bivouac on the river banks, to avoid interfering with the nocturnal activities of the beavers.

Vallée de la Roanne

To avoid disappointment, note that the last few years of particularly dry summers have considerably affected the flow of our rivers. In the event of drought, this can even lead to bathing being prohibited. In the completely opposite situation, beware of the rapid rise in water levels in the narrow gorges with heavy rainfall.

Enjoy the wide expanses of our lakes

To the south of La Motte-Chalancon, the Pas des Ondes Lake provides an oasis of freshness at the heart of the Baronnies Provençales. Its charm lies in the contrast between the lake, with its sandy beaches and the surrounding mountains. At the hottest time of the year, the leisure base offers activities for the whole family. At Luc-en-Diois, at the heart of a unique and rocky landslip, the listed site of Le Claps features a small natural lake and smaller, more secluded, pools further upstream.
