Between the Drôme and the Hautes-Alpes, Hannibal and his elephants are said to have passed through this forest on the pass, which conceals a winding road with an astonishing railroad line, and the Maravel valley, now wild again, with its hamlets...
1/ Go straight ahead on the main road to the village center, past the town hall. After the last house, before the bridge, take the road opposite.
2/ At the vacation village, continue straight ahead on the track for 150m, then fork right. It runs alongside the Chauranne stream. After the railway bridge, the path twists upwards, cut the track and continue along the path. Take the D93 to the left for 600 m (take care), then leave it in a bend to the right to find it again further up. Follow it to the left to reach the Col de Cabre (1180 m).
>Viewpoint at the end of the parking lot.
3/ Opposite the building, take the path along the left-hand wall. It climbs into the undergrowth and crosses the eastern flank of the Arrès (follow the signs) before passing the meadows of the Champ des Marais protected by the Piégu peaks to the south and Chauvet to the north.
4/ Continue north and take the road leading to the hamlet of Pilhon (1100 m).
5/ Leave the chapel on your right and, at the end of the hamlet, take the left-hand path. It overlooks the road and then continues downhill, crossing a talweg. Take the left-hand track for 70 m, then the right-hand path. After three brooks, you come to a wide path.
> Short variant: take the left-hand track down to Fourcinet.
6/ Climb the right-hand track. It continues between fields and woods. Then take the track on the left. At Les Sartoux, go down the road.
7/ Continue along the road. Cross Fourcinet on the D150 for 280 m and turn left. It leads off from La Vière and becomes a track. Before the last house, take the path on the right. Cross a meadow (watch out for guard dogs) and take the left-hand track back to Beaurières. Take the road to the right to reach the starting parking lot.
